The Story Behind the Song

“Great Is Thy Mercy, O God” began as a poem that I wrote many years ago. It was originally published in one of my poetry books under the title “Great Is Thy Mercy, O God” before it was later developed into a song.

The poem was born out of personal circumstances in my life. During that time, I felt deeply encouraged by the grace and mercy of God. His loving presence touched my life in a very personal way, and my heart responded with praise and thanksgiving.

Many of my poems and songs have come from moments when I have experienced the touch of God in the middle of real-life situations. Sometimes these moments arise through difficulties, uncertainty or times when I need His strength and guidance. At other times, they come through a quiet awareness of His love and faithfulness. “Great Is Thy Mercy, O God” expresses my gratitude for the mercy and love that God has shown me personally.

The Melody

I especially love the melody of this song. The more I listen to it, the more it helps me to slow down and meditate on the wonderful grace and mercy of God.

For me, the words and melody belong together. The melody carries the message gently and allows the meaning of the lyrics to settle more deeply within my heart. Each time I hear the song, I am reminded again that God’s mercy is great, His love is everlasting, and His grace continues to sustain us throughout every season of life.

Biblical Inspiration

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

Psalm 103:8 (KJV)

The Bible repeatedly reminds us that God is compassionate, gracious and rich in mercy. His mercy is not distant or impersonal. It reaches into our individual circumstances, strengthens us in our weakness and reassures us that we are never beyond His loving care.

Reflection

God’s mercy can meet us in the most personal places of our lives. He knows our struggles, our disappointments, our fears and the burdens that we may not be able to explain to anyone else.

When we recognise His hand upon our lives, our hearts can respond with praise. We may not understand everything that is happening, but we can still trust that His grace is sufficient and His mercy will never fail.

As I listen to “Great Is Thy Mercy, O God,” I am reminded to pause and remember the many ways God has carried me, comforted me and shown His love to me. I hope this song will also encourage listeners to reflect on the mercy of God in their own lives and to offer Him their heartfelt praise.

Merciful and loving God,

Thank You for Your wonderful grace and unfailing mercy. Thank You for touching my life personally and for being near to me through every circumstance.

Help me to remember Your faithfulness, especially during difficult or uncertain times. Open my eyes to recognise Your loving hand upon my life, and fill my heart with gratitude and praise.

May this song encourage every listener to draw nearer to You, rest in Your grace and trust in Your everlasting love.
