Scripture focus: Psalm 23; John 10:11–14; Isaiah 40:11
Psalm 23 is one of the best-known and most deeply loved passages in the Bible. Its opening declaration, “The Lord is my shepherd,” expresses a relationship of trust, dependence and belonging. David does not speak only about a distant God who rules from heaven. He speaks about the Lord who stays near, provides, leads, restores and protects.
These words have comforted believers in peaceful seasons and in times of grief, illness, uncertainty and change. Psalm 23 does not promise a life without valleys. It promises that we will never walk through them alone.
The Shepherd Who Provides
A good shepherd knows what the sheep need. He leads them to pasture and water, watches over them and keeps them from wandering into danger. When David says that he will not lack, he is expressing confidence in God’s faithful care. This does not mean that every desire will be fulfilled. It means that our lives are held by the One who knows our deepest needs.
We often measure security by what we can see or control. Psalm 23 invites us to measure it by the character of our Shepherd. God’s provision may come as daily strength, timely help, wise guidance, a caring person, or peace that sustains us when circumstances have not yet changed.
The Shepherd Who Restores
The psalm describes green pastures and still waters, then says that God restores the soul. Our souls can become tired through responsibility, disappointment, sorrow and prolonged uncertainty. Sometimes we continue outwardly while inwardly we feel depleted. God sees that hidden weariness.
The Shepherd does not drive exhausted sheep without rest. He leads them to places of renewal. We can receive His restoring care through prayer, Scripture, worship, Christian fellowship and quiet time in His presence. Restoration is not always sudden. Often, it is the gentle work of God rebuilding our strength day by day.
The Shepherd Who Guides
God leads His people in right paths for His name’s sake. His guidance is both loving and holy. He does not merely help us reach our preferred destination; He shapes our character as we walk with Him. At times, the right path may require patience, forgiveness, courage or surrender. Yet the Shepherd never asks us to travel a road that He refuses to walk with us.
When the future feels unclear, we can return to the simple prayer: “Lord, lead me.” We may not be shown every step at once, but God’s Word gives direction, and His Spirit helps us live faithfully in the present.
The Shepherd in the Valley
The valley of deepest darkness is not described as a permanent home. It is a place through which the Shepherd leads us. David’s confidence rests not in the absence of danger but in the presence of God: “You are with me.” That short assurance lies at the heart of the psalm.
In painful seasons, explanations may not bring the comfort we need. The presence of Christ can. Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and lays down His life for them (John 10:11–14). At the cross, He entered suffering for us; through His resurrection, He opened the way to eternal hope. Therefore, even in our darkest valley, we belong to a Shepherd whose love has already overcome death.
Goodness and Mercy Will Follow
Psalm 23 ends with confident hope. God’s goodness and mercy do not merely appear occasionally; they follow His people throughout their days. Looking back, we may recognise moments when His grace carried us even before we understood what He was doing.
My song “The Lord Is My Shepherd” grew from this enduring message of comfort and trust. Singing Scripture helps us hold God’s promises close when fear tries to speak more loudly. The words become not only something we read, but a confession of faith: the Lord is my Shepherd; He is with me; His goodness and mercy will not leave me.
In the latter part of the song, I especially wanted to emphasise the words, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me.” To me, this is more than a beautiful ending: it is a promise from God. God’s promises carry great weight, and this assurance strengthens my hope and deepens my faith in Him. Whatever the path ahead may hold, I can trust that His goodness and mercy will continue to accompany me.
Reflection
Which part of Psalm 23 do you most need today: provision, rest, restoration, guidance, protection or hope? Read the psalm slowly and personally. Wherever you are on the journey, place your trust again in the Shepherd. He knows your name, understands your need and remains beside you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are my Good Shepherd. Thank You for knowing me, caring for me and remaining with me in every season. Lead me beside still waters and restore my soul. When I walk through dark valleys, help me to fear no evil because You are near. Guide me in Your righteous paths, and let Your goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life. Amen.
